Spokane International airport is located 250km south of Nelson, and services a variety of airlines with daily flights to most major US cities. Driving from Spokane airport to Nelson takes approx 3.5 to 4 hrs depending on driving conditions and border crossing.

Spokane airport or Castlegar airport?

Reliability
Spokane airport is more reliable than Castlegar (especially in winter where flights are often delayed or cancelled due to local weather conditions). This is typically only an issue in the winter months (Nov thru March)

Distance from Nelson
Castlegar airport: 35 minute drive.
Spokane airport: 3.5 to 4 hours depending on border crossing and road conditions.

Cost
Flying in to Spokane and chartering a van can often be cheaper than connecting on to Castelgar airport.

US - Canada Border Issues

At a minimum Canadian and US travellers should have governement issued picture ID (i.e. drivers license) and proof of citizenship (i.e. birth cerificate) to cross the Canada-US border. We recommend travellers have a current passport.

There are also restrictions on what items you can take across the border (i.e. citrus fruit, meat products).
